Jitsu International Member Countries
The Jitsu Foundation was established in 1978 (then under the name National
Samurai Jiu Jitsu Association) with two clubs - Keighley & Plymouth. Since then
The Jitsu Foundation has grown to 102 clubs throughout Great Britain. Starting from two clubs in 1993, Jitsu Canada
has grown to eleven clubs today. Most of the clubs are located in the province of Ontario, however in the last few
years Jitsu Canada has expanded by establishing clubs in Calgary, Alberta and Vancouver & Burnaby, British Columbia.
Six of the clubs are university based, with the other five being community clubs.
There are twelve black-belt ranked members, two of whom originally trained in the UK, the others having been
trained in Canada.
The Jitsu Foundation USA started in Spartanburg SC in 1995 with a small (but gruelling) full day of
demonstrations performed by Michael Mallen Sensei and Ady Treadwell Sensei in the lobby of the YMCA.
By the end of the day we had signed up a number of new Jitsuka and started sessions soon after with a
handful of novices. During the next few years the club hosted sessions with Canadian and English
visitors all coming to enjoy a good training session and the southern hospitality. Needless to say
many tales can be told of these events. The club has remained true to the philosophy of Jitsu of
train hard and play hard and as a result we have gained a certain reputation in the local martial art
community! The school has remained a small but enthusiastic group over the years and currently has 15
active members. In late 2005 we made the move to a permanent location and now offer training to
juniors and adults most nights of the week.
There are currently three centres for jiu jitsu in Australia and New Zealand. Auckland (NZ) has a college
club, and Wellington (NZ) has a community club and a university club. Sydney (Aus) has a community club.
Jitsu South Africa was established in 2005 with the opening of the Pretoria Jitsu Club. There is currently only a
single jitsu club in SA, with around 15 dedicated jitsuka of all grades. However, plans are being finalised for at
least two new clubs in the next year (a second in Pretoria, and the first in Johannesburg).
The Cyprus Jitsu Club was established in October 2007, based in Limassol, on the south coast of the island, thus
reopening the Cyprus region (first club in 1989 by the late Andy Wallace). It is currently the only jitsu club in
Cyprus. The club is still in its early stages, with no more than 10 members training regularly, and with plans for
a first grading sometime within 2009.
There is one club in Holland located in Amsterdam.
There is one club in Brazil. |
